In our letter, we spoke of Will being involved in the Celebrate Recovery program in Birmingham. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that, it is a “Christ-centered, 12 step recovery program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind.” It began at Saddleback Church in California and has grown to include 35,000 churches around the world. Because of Will’s past drug addiction and current struggles, CR is initials written in pen on our calendar for each Tuesday night.
I (Katye) attended with Will on evening, and was privileged to hear the honesty and brokenness of his group. People aren’t there to pretend that they have it all together, they are there because they are in bondage, and they know it. They are there to pursue Christ in all areas of their lives. They are there for accountability. They are there because they tried making it on their own, and it didn’t work.
The leader of AT-3 approached Andy Weatherley with the possibility of pairing us with their church. He casually mentioned that Will had been part of leading CR, not knowing that Andy and the other church leaders had researched faith-based addiction groups and decided to begin a CR at Grace Church in January 2019. God is so cool! We continue to be amazed at how God has worked things out so perfectly!
Will has the opportunity to share his testimony and God’s calling with multiple CR groups in the Chicago area during the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing how God uses Will’s story to encourage and challenge others.
